Goal of the Overall VISTA Project: The project goal is to help food insecure people in Maine with limited resources benefit from nutritious, locally produced food. The VISTA will build capacity for infrastructure, marketing and communications, training, and fundraising related to CCFSC’s Maine Meat Initiative (MMI) located at Ummah Farm Food Hub and Cooperative. The VISTA will also support and serve as CCFSC’s liaison to an equitable food and land access consortium in which CCFSC participates. The activities of the VISTA member will help disrupt the cycle of poverty by increasing access to nutritious, culturally-important local foods for poor families and by building a stronger local food economy that creates training, income, and employment opportunities.

Summer Associate VISTA

The Summer Associate will focus on two main projects: supporting summer meals programming for Portland, ME Public Schools and working with the Cumberland County Food Security Council Gleaning Initiative. Summer meals are provided by Portland Public Schools Food Services free of cost to students and families and are available at various sites throughout the city of Portland. The Summer Associate will help train summer meals volunteers, advertise summer meals on social media, and support enrichment activities. The Gleaning Initiative harvests excess produce from local farms and gardens and redistributes it to communities throughout Cumberland County. The Summer Associate will help harvest and collect local produce, coordinate gleaning volunteers, staff community share tables, and assist in redistribution to community organizations.
The full-time (35-40 hours/week), 8-10 week term begins on June 12 or June 26. Applicants must be 18 or older. Transportation required. Benefits for this commitment include: A biweekly stipend of $791; choice of AmeriCorps Education Award (scholarship) OR cash stipend upon completion; and professional development/training.
