Racial and Economic Justice:

CCFSC continues to hold space for difficult conversations about racism in the food system and disparate health and wealth outcomes for people of color. We use tools including the Racial Wealth Gap Learning Simulation and hold public discussions to facilitate shared understand about challenging topics like race and white supremacy. We work in the policy realm to support initiatives that will result in more equitable and food self-sufficient communities. We partner with groups including Maine Black Community Development who inform our initiatives and provide insight into the lived experience of oppression

MISSION

The Cumberland County Food Security Council's mission is to initiate and facilitate collaborative action toward a just, resilient, and sustainable food system that ensures equitable access for all people to enough healthy food.

VISION

  • Everyone can access nourishing and culturally appropriate food at all times.
  • Everyone has the knowledge and resources to obtain and consume foods that support their health and happiness.
  • Everyone has the opportunity to take an active role in building a just, resilient, and sustainable food system.
  • Each child appreciates nutritious food and its role in fueling play, learning, and growth.
  • Each elder thrives through strong community connections and access to nutritious food they can enjoy.

VALUES

  • All people have equal value.
  • Adequate, nutritious food is a human right.
  • Collaborative efforts are more powerful than those undertaken by individuals or single organizations.
  • We all have a role in articulating the problem and identifying potential solutions to hunger.
  • We trust, believe, and center the voices and needs of people experiencing food insecurity.
  • Long-term solutions to hunger must address climate change and the root causes of racial, economic, and environmental injustice.
  • Together, we can end hunger.
The Cumberland County Food Security Council is a rare food council with a purpose to implement strategies to end food insecurity. It prioritizes its food system initiatives beginning with putting the means of food production in the hands of people who need healthy food most.  We recognize that addressing the complex problem of hunger must engage the whole community if we are to solve it.

Our work is primarily focused on the following areas:
